I have been a fan of American football my whole life, even longer than I have been a gamer. When I was a kid, maybe 12 years old, my brother, some neighborhood kids, and I would take over the vacant lot behind our house and play pick up games of 3v3 or 4v4 football.
When I was the quarterback, I would pretend to be Lynn Dickey or Joe Montana. When I played receiver, I pretended to be James Lofton or John Taylor. On defense, I had to be Dick Butkus or Mike Singletary…had to.
I loved playing football with my friends more than just about anything.
Christmas of 1986 my brother and I would receive the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). There were a couple of football games available, but I wouldn’t dig into my life long hobby until the release of the home version of Tecmo Bowl in 1988. Tecmo Bowl was the first football game that consumed my free time. There were 11 game seasons that also included the playoffs and the Tecmo Championship Game. There were also real NFL players.
Since then, video games based on American Football have been my first choice when gaming in my spare time. Even when money was tight I managed to scrape together enough pennies to purchase the annual offerings from EA Sports, Sony, Tecmo, or Sega. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed thousands of hours of video games based on football and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
For a long time now I’ve wanted to do a series of game reviews on the football games I’ve loved, hated, owned, and wanted. The Armchair Quarterback Series is the result of that desire. each episode will review a classic football game from the Madden NFL games, the NFL2K games, the NFL Gameday games, and other franchises that have come and gone over the years. I’ll talk about what worked, what didn’t work, what I loved, what I hated, and everything in between. I may, with a little luck, even have some fun along the way.
The first episode of the Armchair Quarterback Series will premiere 08/22/2020 during the TwoCowsGaming Twitch stream of Madden NFL 21, with new episodes airing every Saturday. We look forward to seeing you all soon!
Regards,
Johncow
